The Skeleton Tribes

The body painting that resembles skeletons is the most striking feature of the Skeleton tribes of Papua New Guinea. The tribe isolates itself a lot and only comes out during festivals are quite private with information about their daily life remaining quite scanty.

Typically, the tribe dresses up in body paint to intimidate their enemies and make them run away thinking they have supernatural powers. Apart from the skeleton painting, the tribe also has various dances that they use when meeting their enemies to psychologically intimidate them, which gives them a chance to dominate.

In earlier times, the tribes’ people dressed up as skeletons to find their members who had gone missing. If the person was attacked by a bear, they would mimic dead bodies and lie with other skeletons in the cave as a camouflage waiting for it to sleep. As soon as it sleeps, they would attack and kill it, rendering the village free from further attacks from the animal.
