Narku tribe (Simbu)

The tribes in Chimbu adorn huge headdresses made from different birds with some feathers being as long as one meter. The people also love decorating their bodies to make them shine, keep warm, and in some cases intimidate their many enemies.

Some of the items used for decoration include pig’s fat, kina shells, and paint made from plant oil, clay, and mud. They also wear body ornaments known as “Bilas” which is used to ward off enemies.

The Chimbu people have several ceremonies that take place within the community with the most important ones being initiation and marriage. These ceremonies involve the coming together of families and building relationships across the members of the tribe. Both ceremonies involve the exchanging or slaughtering of pigs which are considered valuable assets in the Chimbu tribes.
