Mt Hagen Festival

Mt Hagen festival is one of the most popular cultural events in Papua New Guinea attracting thousands of tourists annually. The colorful festival which was established in 1961 is set at a location that has Mt. Hagen as the backdrop giving the festival a breath-taking view.

It is a two-day event that is filled with performances from different tribes that reside in the highlands and its environs. These tribes include Chimbu, Jiwaka, Enga, and Huli which showcase great performances throughout the event days.

The Hagen festival involves feasting, singing, dancing, and ritual performances by different tribes and is meant to create unity among them. Some performances include at least 1000 participants taking their place on the showground resulting in a vibrant and captivating performance. The participants often adorn precious headdresses filled with bird feathers making them stand out during the dances. As part of the festival, visitors get to see rarely seen exotic birdlife and cultural practices exclusive to the tribal cultures that have remained the same for centuries.
